About the Academy

The Golf Academy at Sweetwater was founded in 2014 in order to provide an elite instructional, club fitting, and practice experience for a discounted rate. The hightly trained and dedicated coaching staff brings over 24 years of professional experience and has been mentored by some of the top golf minds in the United States.

Academy Instructors

Al Consoli, PGA Director of Instruction

Al is a native of Reading, Pennsylvania and most recently the teaching professional/club fitter at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course. Al began his collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame and later received his B.S. in Biology from American University. Attempting to pursue a career in medicine, he entered the masters program at New York Medical College and later attended Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2001. 

Realizing his passions lie elsewhere, he made the transition into the golf business in 2003 going to work for Michael Breed, the current host of The Golf Channel's "The Golf Channel's "The Golf Fix", at Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale, NY. He proceeded to work at several top clubs in the Metropolitan Section including a teaching position at Westchester Country Club in Rye, NY, the longtime host of the Buick Classic. Al has had the good fortune to extensively train under 4 of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers in America and his pursuit of improved understanding and education led him to become one of Jim Hardy's Plane Truth Certified Intructors in 2012.

Al considers becoming the Director of Instruction at Sweetwater Country Club a tremendous professional honor. He is excited to learn and share information with the current staff, and most importantly to help the Membership master the ability to produce a correct, repetitive impact and improve those handicaps!


Shaun McEwen, Lead Instructor 

Shaun is a native of Phoenix, AZ and most recently the First Assistant Golf Professional at Sugar Creek Country Club. Upon graduating from high school, Shaun furthered his playing career at Florida A&M University on a golf scholarship under Coach Marvin Green. While attending Florida A&M, he was the team captain for three years, All MEAC first team, and concluded his senior season with a 5th place finish in Nationals. Before turning Pro, Shaun was the Assistance Golf Coach/Team Instructor at his Alma Mater, Florida A&M, where his students went on to win the individual medalist honor that year. 

Upon completeion of college, Shaun went on to play serveral Mini-Tours. While playing he discovered that his love for teaching was becoming greater than his love for competing and began teaching several of his peers. Shaun has had the opportunity to study under several Topp 100 instructors; most notably Golf Digests' #1 instructor Butch Harmon. His passion for teaching, continuous learning and dedication to his craft is what allows him to help his students achieve and exceed their personal golfing goals. His teaching philosophy is centered around effective communication, impact position, ball flight evaluation, physical abilities and turning weakness into strengths. One of Shaun's most memorable golfing experiences was playing golf with Tiger Woods. 

 

Bob McHugh, PGA Director of Golf

PGA Class A Member Bob McHugh is the Director of Golf here at Sweetwater CC.  He brings a wealth of experience to the club, most recently serving as the Head Golf Professional at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Massachusetts where he hosted and directed services associated with the 2004 Women’s U.S. Open Golf Championship.  Prior to this professional experience, Bob served as the first Head Golf Professional at Harbor Lakes Golf Course in Port Washington, New York and received the prestigious Arnold Palmer Golf Professional of the Year Award in 2002.  Bob is the consummate Golf Professional with expertise and quality customer service standards in all operations relating to golf here at Sweetwater CC.  An accomplished and experienced teacher who credits PGA Top Teachers Brad Brewer, John O’Leary, Craig Shankland, Randy Smith, David Leadbetter, and Charlie Sorrell as influential models, Bob is also available for golf instruction and clubfitting., scheduled through the golf shop. Bob and his wife Kristin live here in Sugar Land with their twin daughters Emily and Elyssa.

 Assistant Golf Professionals

Our assistant golf professionals are actively involved in all aspects of the golf operation here at Sweetwater CC.  You will see these busy staff members working on tournaments and events for all of our golf associations here at the club, supervising our outside golf member services team, organizing and maintaining the golf apparel and merchandise in the golf shop, and most of all, working as an integral part of our golf member customer service in the golf shop.   Additionally, all of our assistant golf professionals are available for golf instruction, clubfitting, and club repair service, scheduled through the golf shop or the Sweetwater Golf Academy.

March 2017 

Girls Get Golf Ready (ages 9-17)

March 4 & 18 (Saturday)
10:00 am - 11:00 am
$10 Academy Member / $20 Club Member per week

This program is designed to teach girls how to combine fun, friends, fitness and fundamentals of the game. They will learn everything they will need to play golf in just a few sessions and they will have fun while doing it! This is the perfect program for the beginner to intermediate girl golfer who is looking to improve her skills and meet other friends with whom she can tackle the links. 

 

Spring Break Junior Camp (ages 7-14)

The purpose of this camp is to develop fundamental movement skills, establish functional movement patterns, improve dexterity, understand the parts of the golf course and some basic rules, teach basic golf specific skills, and of course fun, fun, fun!  This camp is the perfect way to either introduce your child to the sport or to continue to nurture their love for the game.

Adult Player Development Program
(Open to any golfer who has a USGA handicap 10-36)

March 11 & 25 (Saturday)
9:30-11 AM

Each month in this series will focus on a particular golf skill and offer 2 sessions to reinforce knowledge and technique.  March will be BUNKER PLAY.  We encourage any golfer male, female, or junior who possesses a USGA handicap that ranges from 10-36 to participate.  By the end of March, students will understand and believe in their new bunker technique, know how to train to master the method and develop essentials skills, and feel and think like a champion so they can trust their method and skills.

After School Golf provides an excellent opportunity for your junior golfer to weekly work on improving their golf and athletic skills.  This program will cover the basics of full swing, short game, and fundamental movement skills.  This combination of developing both golf specific skills and overall athleticism will encourage a fun and engaging atmosphere for all.

 

Ladies Get Golf Ready 

5 weeks (Every Wednesday April 5, 12, 19, 26 May 3)

$65 Academy Member/$100 Club member for the series

Get Golf Ready is designed to teach everything you’ll need to play golf in just a few lessons.  Each session will focus on the various golf skills you will use while playing.  In addition to learning the basics, you will be guided onto the golf course to put your skills into action in a casual, friendly setting.  The five lesson series will cover the following:  preshot routine, putting, chipping, pitching, irons, fairway metals, driver, caring for the course, shortcuts to save time while you play, rules, and scoring.

Each month in this series will focus on a particular golf skill and offer 2 sessions to reinforce knowledge and technique.  April will be PUTTING.  We encourage any golfer male, female, or junior who possesses a USGA handicap that ranges from 10-36 to participate.  By the end of April, students will understand and believe in their putting fundamentals, know how to choose the correct line, start the ball on that line, and understand how to match the line with sufficient speed.
